What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that originated around 5000 years ago in the holy land of India. The word ‘Ayurveda’ is a Sanskrit word & is composed of 'Ayur'= Life & 'Veda'= Science/knowledge. The word Ayurveda refers to the science of life that has the power to heal the human body naturally.

Ayurveda is all about maintaining a complete balance in the human body. Natural spices, herbs & our habits play an important role in this system of medicine. Thus, it consists mainly of natural practices to enhance the physical & psychological well being.

AYURVEDIC CONSTITUTION


Ayurveda works on the basic functioning of natural elements in our body. These natural elements are earth, air, water, fire & ether. Other than these elements, Ayurveda recognises qualities to describe every element, based on which, treatment is provided. Vata, Pitta & Kapha are three doshas of the human body that determine the nature of the particular body. The correct balance or combination of all the three doshas is important for the proper functioning of the human body. An imbalance of these doshas can lead to diseases in the body.

Three books written in Sanskrit form the basis of Ayurveda. These books are Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita & Ashtanga Hridayam. All the three texts are age-old and rule the science of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is about the holistic approach to living. It not only heals the body but also heals the mind & spirit. The simple methodology of Ayurveda promotes longevity & overall well being.

AYURVEDIC DIET


Ayurvedic diet consists of very simple & natural food. According to Ayurveda, it is not just the quality of food that affects the body, but also the timing of meals & the way of consuming it. Ayurveda theory works exactly the opposite of modern lifestyle. An ideal Ayurvedic diet should be free of excess fat, oils & spices. The food generally comprises of herbs & plant-based items that are non-toxic for the human body. Cleansing of the body is also an integral part of Ayurveda. This science emphasizes the intake of rasas or tastes. This involves the use of differently tasting foods like sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, astringent & sour foods.

Ayurvedic Diet is all about eating natural & pure food within limits at proper timings of the day. Along with food, the daily routine of a person is also an important part of Ayurveda as this may impact the eating & digestion process. Proper rest & regular exercise is also as important as food as per Ayurveda.
